Medal for Excellence

The Society of Arts and Crafts Medal for Excellence in Craft Award

The Medal for Excellence in Craft Award was established in 1913 to honor recognized master craft artists and others who have made significant contributions to the American decorative arts field. Since then, more than 60 artists have received this honor. Honorees receive a medal in conjunction with a major exhibition of their work, artist lecture and exhibition publication. After a 40 year hiatus, the Award was re-instituted in 1990, when ceramist Karen Karnes was selected. Recent honorees include: Sam Maloof, furniture maker, CA, 1991; John Prip, metalsmith, MA, 1995; and Jonathan Fairbanks, distinguished service, MA, 1997; Lino Tagliapietra, glass artist, Italy, 2001.
